Banana Milkshake Stormtrooper Cupcakes

May The Fourth Be With You!
...get it... heh.

Yes, this is what I baked in aid of yesterday.. it's Star Wars Day (May the 4th).

After doing a little Pinterest hunting (i'm not that creative or into Star Wars - sorry - *hides*) I came across a trend of people making cupcakes based on the Stormtroopers. They were using the marshmallows as their heads. This I thought I could definitely do without having a Pinterest fail (we all know these can happen) and adapt!

The base of the cupcake I decided should be chocolate (A Mary Berry recipe) and the buttercream, I don't know why, maybe I was craving it at the time, but I thought this should be banana milkshake flavour! To do this, I simply added some Nesquik banana milkshake powder to do buttercream, eh voila. A light and airy banana-y buttercream was the result. Delish.

Ingredients

Chocolate Cupcake
4tbsp boiling water
40g cocoa powder
3 free-range eggs (I actually used 2 large duck eggs since I had some leftover to use, but if you don't have, just use normal hen eggs)
175g unsalted butter
165g unrefined golden caster sugar
115g self-raising flour
1tsp baking powder

Banana milkshake buttercream
150g unsalted butter
270g icing sugar
1.5tsp Banana milkshake powder (try the Nesquik one)

14 white marshmallows (the fluffy kind if you can - try to avoid the ones that crack and are coated, as I used these and they proved difficult to paint on)
Paste colour in Midnight Black (I used this one)
A thin stick or brush to paint with
14 papercases

Method

- Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees (400F, gas mark 6)

1. Line a muffin tin with your paper cases

2. Sift cocoa powder in a large bowl and pour in your boiling water. Mix to a paste.

3. Add the remaining cake ingredients and mix until all incorporated and no lumps. A stand or hand mixer is recommended.

4. Divide the mix into your cases, evenly (I actually only did 12 but the recipe states 14).

5. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until springy when touched. Cool in their cases on a wire rack. While the cupcakes are cooling, make the buttercream.

6. Make sure the butter is soft (I put mine in the microwave for 10 seconds). Put in a bowl and whisk until light and fluffy, for about 5 minutes (again, use a stand or hand mixer).

7. Once soft, add the icing sugar a bit at a time, and once all is added and combined, whisk until light and fluffy (about 7 minutes).

8. Add the milkshake powder and whisk until all incorporated

9. Once the cupcakes are completely cool, using a palette knife, spread the buttercream onto the cupcakes. It's best to add a big bit into the middle of the cupcake and the spread out, using the edge of your palette, whilst turning the cupcake with your hand.

10. Place your marshmallows onto a plate or some sort of surface where you don't mind painting, and using the colour paste, paint the typical stormtrooper face. I used a stick for painting and had to di mine in a few times to get it to transfer onto my marshmallow. Also my marshmallows were a bit cracked, which made it very difficult to paint on! Use fluffy mallows if you can.
Here is what a stormtrooper looks like, for you to copy.

Hope you enjoyed this post. It's something a little bit different to what I usually bake, but I had a lot of fun being more creative that usual, so perhaps I will do this again.
Are you doing anything special for Star Wars Day? What did you think of the new Star Wars film?
